Nicola Harris (00:04.53)
Hello everybody and welcome back to another episode of the Economy of Soul. I am, I don't even know if excited is really close enough for me to describe how thrilled I am to have Kelly Trenneth on the podcast today. She is the founder of Flux Cycle House. And what I can say about Kelly is that I think from the moment that I met her, I was absolutely
addicted, obsessed, and like all in on what she was creating, who she is, the like the energy that she has for her business and for her community, her people is like truly one of the most unbelievable things I've ever witnessed with my own eyeballs. So I am thrilled to have Kelly here today. We're going to just jam on all the things of what it means to be an entrepreneur.
Her business has only been really in business for the last two years. So while you're just still taking your baby steps as an entrepreneur, I feel like what you have created is like what we all hope to create after like 20 years of being in business. So thank you so much for being here and for joining me today. Why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself, Kelly?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (01:33.984)
my goodness, thank you so much for having me. I'm so excited to be here and obviously to talk about my favorite topic. So that's really exciting. Yeah, I am Kelly. am a fitness instructor. And that turned into a passion. turned into a passion of I felt how people were sorry, someone's coming to the studio right now.
Nicola Harris (01:38.664)
Mm-hmm.
Nicola Harris (01:57.256)
That's okay. We'll pause.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (02:03.586)
Hello, how are you?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (02:12.494)
yeah we have a community board that's perfect. Yeah do you have some here? Awesome. Okay yeah thank you great have a good day appreciate the stop by.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (02:26.99)
I'm gonna go lock the door.
Nicola Harris (02:35.526)
Yeah, of course. Of course I'm going to end that out. So you just start from, hi, I'm Kelly. Just start from the top.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (02:38.286)
Can we edit that out? Okay. Okay.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (02:48.758)
Okay. Hi, I'm Kelly. I'm so excited to be here. Thank you so much for that introduction. It still blows my mind that we have been open for two years, like open for two years when it started as a dream, right? And yeah, a little bit about me. I am a fitness instructor turned studio owner based off of what I felt I needed to bring to
our hometown, my hometown, the way that movement made me feel and the way that people can inspire and change your day, the trajectory of your week. It inspired me to want to be part of that. And it's an amazing, amazing moment to witness those things happen. And so it started small, I wanted to. Sorry, Nikki.
Nicola Harris (03:43.432)
you talking about? Just talk. What are you talking about?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (03:49.358)
I'm sorry, Nikki. I know it's so hard today. I don't know. It's so hard today. I'm so in my head.
Nicola Harris (03:50.248)
Do you want to just pause it? We can do it later. It's your call, girlfriend.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (03:59.564)
I've done this before. I've been on a podcast. haven't had to pause ever. And I don't want to pause. I don't.
Nicola Harris (04:00.7)
Well, it's up to you. also want you to be like that I was in a space where I felt like I was, you know, could deliver. It doesn't matter. Listen, it does not matter to me. What are you talking about? What are you?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (04:17.55)
So.
Nicola Harris (04:21.018)
You tell me what you want to do.
Okay, if you mess a word up, who cares? I mess words up all the time. You just skim over it.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (04:28.206)
I'm gonna try one more time.
Nicola Harris (04:33.776)
Right? Yeah, 100%. You don't care. No one cares about that. And in fact, I actually think it makes you sound more human. So don't even worry about that.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (04:34.894)
I know you make it sound you rhyme. Yes, I know I do it on the mic all the time
Nicola Harris (04:47.57)
Okay, let's do it.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (04:51.214)
Okay, we'll try again. Okay.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (04:57.518)
Okay. Okay. Hi, my name's Kelly. Thank you for that amazing introduction. I, um, yeah, I born and raised in Chilliwack and fitness instructor turned entrepreneur, something that a passion for how movement and community made me feel turned something that I wanted to make bigger, wanted to make more possible, wanted to bring
Nicola Harris (05:14.002)
No.
Mm-hmm.
Nicola Harris (05:25.234)
So how did you first become obsessed with fitness? Because I feel like you must be obsessed with fitness to be able to carry the level of energy and engagement and the way that you pull people in during your class, but not only just you, your entire team. How did you become obsessed with that?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (05:25.826)
to people as much as I possibly could. So that's where I thought.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (05:53.112)
Well, it was forced. I wasn't always your typical fitness girly. I was the asthmatic child that got notes from my parents to sign me out of PE class as much as possible. I started my family and shortly after my first child, I fractured my back. And that fracture...
made me realize how important it was to be stronger for my child, for my family and for the rest of my life. So I started with a no impact sport. It was referred to me by my physiotherapist to jump on a spin bike and my first thought was like, no, please no. Spin bike, asthma, it just didn't seem to go hand in hand. I, I
I didn't initially do it for me, I did it for my family and my son. it was a bit of a struggle. The muscles, like your lungs are muscles, so I had to really work on that first and foremost. And eventually, once that started getting easier for me, I ended up...
you know, finding the beat of the music and thinking, okay, well, this might not be so bad. We've got some good tunes and I can focus on something other than trying to catch my breath. And I still didn't seem to jive with it completely. It didn't seem like it was my thing, but it was the thing that my body needed. It was no impact. My back was getting stronger because my core was part of the focus and it felt good. But I had one class where
This girl walks in the room and she says, I'm subbing today's class. She had dreadlocks. She just came home from Bali and I'd never seen her before. And she turned on the music and it was a playlist that I, music I'd never heard before. Now it's like Tropical House or the EDM. And we rode bikes and she spoke to everything I could think of.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (08:13.952)
in these moments that everybody could relate to. She made my day so good. I walked out of that class and I said to my girlfriend, said, you know, if I can make everybody feel the way that she made me feel today, I feel unstoppable. You know, that was the moment that changed it for me. said, there's something more to this. it, yeah, it changed everything for me that moment. And I
Nicola Harris (08:23.9)
This one.
Nicola Harris (08:30.822)
Hmm
Nicola Harris (08:40.54)
I love that. I mean, that's so incredibly beautiful that, you took something that was happening to you in your life, this down moment where you're like, my gosh, I've just broken my back. I need to get healthy for my family. And then in that, got so inspired that you found your own calling. I mean, how fucking awesome is that, right? That it's like in the trenches.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (08:41.984)
I wanted to share how I felt.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (09:08.491)
It's.
Nicola Harris (09:09.048)
of what life has served, you have this like glimmer, this moment where all of a sudden you're like, ding, ding, ding, all the lights are going off and you're like, I think there's something here and I'm gonna listen to that. So what did that process look like for you after you had that realization?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (09:34.2)
Well, at the time, Chilliwack didn't have any dark room spin studios. So we were spinning at the YMCA, the floor to ceiling windows, the clock right across from my bike so I could count down the seconds I could run out of air.
Nicola Harris (09:44.52)
I count down the seconds.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (09:51.791)
right? But it was so funny how that one class showed me a different perspective to movement. And I was able to, you know, look around me and be like, wow, this community is gorgeous. Like the welcoming community that the YMCA has the helpful community, I, I started, you know, really wrapping myself around that. And I walked into the office one day, and I said, I want to be I want to be a spin instructor.
Nicola Harris (09:55.484)
Sweet.
Nicola Harris (10:17.148)
Mmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (10:22.266)
And the YMCA is so great with their training. They're very particular on how things are done. And they didn't tell me at the time how much I'd have to do in order to get there. Because it's not just a certification in spin. It's a certification in group fitness and strength and conditioning and all of these other components to helping you become a well-rounded fitness instructor in general.
You know, the very last portion of it was, well, if you still want to do spin, there's the spin instructor course. And at the time the YMCA was closing for, for renovations. And so I ended up getting a phone call shortly after that. they said, you know, we've rented a school gym and we have numerous mentors ready to help push people through the program.
We don't know when you'll be able to teach because we don't know our open date, but this is an opportunity. And I said, great, how are we getting the bikes there? They said, no, no bikes, no bikes for this one. We are focusing on everything else first. The foot in the door was the words that were used for me. And that was enough for me. said, okay. And you know, it took a long time for the YMCA to open. It was over a year worth of training with the most
incredible mentors. We did all of our certifications throughout that year. I think what it is, is it's generally a 12 week program. So we got spoiled with that. Lots of education, lots of years of knowledge behind all of these mentors. And so I felt really well equipped when the YMCA opened to teach everything but spin. so I worked on it shortly after, but we had
dark room studios show up in Chilliwack in the meantime. So then I started recognizing how that vibe could feel in a dark room where you feel like you're just there by yourself, working on you. You're in your head, but in the best way you're on your bike. You're just working on you. And I got a bit of that first class that woke me up kind of feeling.
Nicola Harris (12:21.34)
Yeah.
Nicola Harris (12:42.792)
Mmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (12:48.062)
And yeah, that's definitely where I was like, no, no, I really love fitness in general. And I fell in love with strength training and cardiovascular training outside of spin. So I still, I kept that going. I kept teaching those classes, but I really pursued the indoor cycling. I continued that.
Nicola Harris (13:03.72)
So when did you get the inkling of like, I'm going to do this on my own, like I I'm going to branch out, I'm going to build flux. Like how did that come to be?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (13:21.346)
Wow. Well, my husband and I always wanted to have something. Our goal was to always open a business. What that meant and what that looked like, we had no idea. And he really pursued his passions in his career and was successful with that. And so once he achieved his goals and settled into his new career path, he said,
You know, we had these conversations about me going back to work after our second child. And I was doing my side things. I was teaching, I was doing lashes. I was doing all the creative things, but it was that time where it's like, it's time to put another foot forward. What does that look like? And he encouraged me to chase a dream. And so he said, it's your turn. Let's make this happen. Yeah.
Nicola Harris (14:03.304)
Mmm.
Nicola Harris (14:11.524)
Well, like how amazing, right, of having that level of support in your partnership to be like, let's go. Let's do the thing. So talk to me about the evolution of Flux and even just like how you, because I feel, and I mean, my background is in culture development. And so of course, I like get spidey senses where I'm like, something's going on over there. I mean, are you?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (14:23.35)
Absolutely.
Nicola Harris (14:39.716)
Did you intentionally build out what you have? Like, were you thoughtful about that? Were you like, how am I going to take? What steps am I going to take to really make sure that this community feels invincible? Because I feel like your community feels like they're invincible. They come to spin and there's something happening in there for them because I see them posting. see them. The amount of user generated content you have is next level. Like I
People have drank the Kool-Aid, but I don't think the Kool-Aid happens automatically. Or maybe it is just who you are. But I'd love to know, was that an intentional or is it a continuous intentional process of how you're building out that culture in your community? Or is it just you showing up being like, this is all of me?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (15:35.587)
Definitely all of me. I show up authentically myself. can't be that person that is one way behind closed doors and another in front of people. So you really truly do get who I am when you come here. It was very intentional. I had mapped out my values and community was the forefront of what I
Nicola Harris (16:03.41)
Hmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (16:05.196)
was creating before I even had a name. It was always community. I've taught at, I'd like to say all of the group fitness studios in town. I've taught outside of town. the one thing that always stood out to me was the communities. It's always just so beautiful to witness people and the connections. And for me,
I know what that made me feel like and how important that was in times of, you know, like a healing journey, a grieving journey, a celebratory journey. Like I knew how important it was to have those people. And I, that's why it fluxes here, that it was very intentional. I wanted to share how others have made me feel and I wanted to amplify that in my
Nicola Harris (16:55.122)
Well, I think you've done an incredible job with that, really, truly. And I mean, I know I'm fangirling you right now, but I would not do that if I didn't truly believe that something special was going on in that world. And I love that your first moment of inspiration was really in a dark room where she was saying these things that really connected, that you really felt inside of you.
And I think that anyone who comes into it's like, is this a spin class or am I at a motivational talk? Like I need someone, there's no distinction between that because you're in there and you're riding and you're like 100 % into what it is. And so do you coach your people through that process or do you give them autonomy over how it is that they want to lead their own classes? Because I feel like
It is very true when they come to sit in the saddle. It's like you're having a moment. Every time. yeah.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (18:04.366)
And that's exactly what we call it as moments, moments, right? I encourage them all to show up as themselves as well. It's very important to me that they create a space because that's their room. When they're teaching, that's their room. That's their community. That's their time. And I want them to be able to show up 100 % themselves. And that's why...
Nicola Harris (18:26.088)
Bye.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (18:33.154)
That's why people come, right? They don't want the same speech every time. It's gotta be something that you want to talk about, that you want to have people relate to. And sometimes we just don't have it in us to share, be vulnerable, or ask them to be. And that's okay too. So I put it out there lightly, you know? Like, let's work on this together when you feel inspired to.
How would you speak to this song? We start easy. What are the lyrics saying to you? How can you relate that to real life? Now, how can we relate that to a whole room of people? How can that be something that they can connect to? So we start with the music because music to me is, it's kind of easier to get vulnerable with rather than yourself.
We start that in the training process and then that kind of opens up the opportunity for them to shape what that looks like in a room, their own way. And then, you know, some have branched off into, you know, sharing on the bike about their own struggles, their own celebrations, those kinds of things. It's not always about like, you can do it. It can be, you did it. It's...
Nicola Harris (19:35.048)
All right.
Nicola Harris (19:48.636)
Mm-hmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (19:56.995)
There's so many different layers to it and I want it to feel like it's coming from the heart, that it's coming from the right place. So we don't force it around here, but it happens really naturally. And I think that's why it hits the way that it does. It is just so real and so raw and we are humans on that podium too and
We want them to know that we're there with you, right? So we share, but we also push and it's, yeah, it's very much what they're feeling in those moments, but we talk about it prior and we communicate during training on how to pull that out. Cause that's very, it can be hard. No, I'm not, I can't always expect myself to motivationally speak my way through a class where...
Nicola Harris (20:41.436)
Yeah.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (20:53.538)
We're human too, we have bad days. We've got good days, we've got exciting things that we're not ready to share. Those things, they're sacred. So we treat them that way.
Nicola Harris (20:59.89)
Well, and I think it's so beautiful. I mean, how often are you in a role where your leader is like, you be you. You know, that doesn't happen very often, right? It's like we have to mask a lot. We have to go out and we have to, you know, be this version that work wants us to be. But the fact that you provide a space not only for your team, but obviously
also for those of us who are coming to the class to just be. Right? And I think that that is so powerful because we don't have a lot of spaces like that. We don't have a lot of spaces like that.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (21:48.621)
Yeah. And we feel that, right? We feel that on the daily. We walk through this world with either a mask on or a chip on our shoulder or, you know, that's welcome here. You can leave it on the bike when you leave, you know, and we'll take care of the rest. Like it's okay to know that it's not always perfect or it's not always great or maybe it is and let's
Nicola Harris (22:16.7)
Yeah, I love that. And I mean, you guys are really great at celebrating your people. Like I see people posting, they've reached their hundredth ride or they, you it's their birthday. Like you really do. I feel like go to such great lengths to really celebrate your community. So talk to me a little bit about why that's important for you.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (22:17.804)
Let's freaking celebrate that.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (22:43.51)
Because we have a tendency, people in general have a tendency to just focus on, you know, the negatives. There's a lot going on in the world all the time, right? And sometimes it's nice to focus on the small wins. Those small wins are what get us to the big ones. And it's always about the journey. The journey is not a straight trajectory upwards to the goal. And
Sometimes that detour becomes a destination and we need to honor that. So it's, yeah, we like to celebrate milestones. We like to celebrate birthdays. We like to, and they like to, the way that they cheer for each other. It's interesting. I was teaching a class last night and I said, like, give it up for yourselves. You did that. And the room, they made some noise and they cheered.
Nicola Harris (23:28.008)
Mmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (23:41.816)
And then I said, give it up for your neighbor. They did that. And it was, it amplified. It was so loud. So the way that they like to show up for each other is just, it's so beautiful to witness.
Nicola Harris (23:43.43)
Nicola Harris (23:51.25)
Well, and I think, you know, what happens there in that room while people are experiencing it isn't really staying there, right? It's like they're experiencing that and then they're going out into the world and impacting others in that way. And that's what I think is so incredibly powerful is that, yeah, it's a spin class, but it's not a spin class, you know?
It's so much more than that because it's also creating this ripple of human beings who are out there walking through life like that because they're receiving it inside there. And I think that is it's it, you know.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (24:42.882)
We tell them all the time, like, it doesn't just stop with you. Like, you have families, you have friends, you have pets, you have jobs, you have life, right? And the way that movement can help shake it up, it can help, it moves you, right? It moves, you walk into a room, a dark room.
and you decide to commit yourself to 50 minutes of movement, you're not gonna walk out of there feeling the same. Even if we didn't say a single thing, that music is gonna change it, the movement is gonna change it, there's so much to it. There's so much to it. So, and like you said, it is quite the ripple effect. And I think people recognize that. So when we say like, this is your 50 minutes, it's for you.
but remember how you walk out of here, you know, and it's going to affect everything and everyone. It's gonna change the rest of your day.
Nicola Harris (25:40.264)
Mm hmm. Yeah. And I think people don't recognize the nuance and these small things of impact that are happening throughout the day that happen there with you. And then they then shift their entire being because they showed up. Right. And I think it's so powerful, obviously, the way that you cheer people on to show up for themselves, because sometimes that's really fucking hard.
Some days, you don't want to show up for yourself, right?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (26:15.165)
yeah.
Nicola Harris (26:16.614)
Yeah, yeah. But it does change you. It does change you, right? OK, let's talk a little bit about the creativity, I think, that it requires to come up with the music. Because I just, mean, we'll link your Instagram below. But I look at some of these videos, and I'm like, I don't even know what is happening in here. From like the coordination.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (26:18.872)
Sometimes it's the hardest thing walking in the front door.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (26:25.901)
It does.
Nicola Harris (26:45.458)
From you actually coming up with the ride to the music to all of it, it feels like an orchestration. Right? And so it's like, how does that magic happen?
Nicola Harris (27:04.349)
Hmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (27:05.516)
Well, it starts with music. It starts with mood. It starts with what inspires you in these moments. I can make a playlist today and no longer be inspired by it tomorrow. So it's very much put together based on in this moment. In this moment, I'm going to sit down and I'm going to draft my class for this evening.
what do I want it to look like? What do I want it to feel like? Outside of themes, because we have lots of themes that we do. Those are, we're a little bit more structured with those. But I personally like to sit down with music that has inspired me throughout the week. I'll have a playlist of just music that I'm jamming out to. And I pull from that. I pull from it. I listen to the lyrics. What kind of messaging is it saying?
I think about what kind of journey do I want to bring them on? Do I want to bring them on an emotional one? Do I want to bring them on a physical one? Do we have any world events that are happening right now that I need to be mindful of? Pop culture has, we know we got to be brushed up on that. And so there's all these mindful pieces to it. And then we got to look at the beats of the music.
Nicola Harris (28:15.912)
Thank
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (28:32.45)
Feet per minute, how that pace looks, where we're gonna start them at, how we're going to build it into a hill or how we're gonna bring it down to a sprint and the why behind each track and pairing it with, know, I wanna do a seated sprint here. I wanna turn all the lights out and have them, I wanna tell them about this thing that inspired me today. And then I want them to be able to take this piece and
Nicola Harris (28:53.469)
Yeah.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (29:02.176)
move through the rest of their day with this little bit of inspiration. But you can't do that on a Rob Zombie track, head banging, doing your crunches and your flies, right? So you have to pick your music accordingly. And I think that at some point it starts to get easier because you really dive deep into music in this career. You have your go-tos, you have...
Nicola Harris (29:21.416)
Cheers.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (29:29.654)
You get the feels from certain things. Yeah, it's a lot about the music and it really speaks to the journey that you want to take them on.
Nicola Harris (29:35.144)
I love that because, I mean, music is so, like it lands so deeply in so many ways, but when you really match it with movement, it takes it to a whole different level. And I mean, it is really an orchestration that it's not a regular like group fitness class.
Right? Like it's not a regular group fitness class. And I think that, I mean, obviously you see the culture of dark rooms, like all over the place. You know, it's like yoga has a culture. Obviously dark room, cycle houses have a culture. Like, so there's obviously some of that that you're borrowing from, but also I think there's been so much obviously of your own authenticity that's been poured into
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (30:03.522)
definitely not a regular group fitness.
Nicola Harris (30:30.49)
your business and what it is that you're bringing to your clients. How do you find your people? Like how do you find other team members that you get that, like that understand that I can deliver that in the same sort of way.
Nicola Harris (30:52.104)
Hmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (30:53.408)
They are already my people. So the instructors that we opened Flux with are personal friends that have gone through their instructor certification journey. There are other instructors that I've worked with in the past that we've kept this strong connection. They're friends and everybody that we opened the studio with.
except for the exception of one that has moved away and got engaged and is living a beautiful life. They're still here. They're all still here. And from there, we've added to our team, but it's, you know, it's been, for instance, we have, we have Robert. Okay. Robert is our meditation guru and our biggest, you know,
Nicola Harris (31:22.152)
Mmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (31:49.147)
woo guy in the room. He comes to our classes. He teaches classes. He's here. I met him on a yoga mat. And it was this, hello, I've sat beside you in yoga classes before, how's your day going moment? And it led to this beautiful journey of him being here at Flux. I've got friends that
I hadn't seen for a few years that had worked on their personal training certifications and reached out and said, know, like, how did you get started? Where should I go? What do I do? And it's like, well, come here. Let's see what we can do with that. So they're all personal friends and acquaintances or new friends based on just
Nicola Harris (32:43.016)
I used to do a lot of recruiting in my corporate job. This was like 8,000 years ago in another lifetime. And I got asked once and they said, well, how do you manage to hire so many great people? Because again, retention was very low with the people that I would hire. And I was like, I'm really sorry, but it's a gut instinct. Like, it's not really something that I can tell you.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (32:46.38)
being in my world. Yeah.
Nicola Harris (33:11.836)
I just get this feeling like they're going to be a good fit with wherever it was that I was hiring them for. So let's just talk about instinct for a minute. Like how much do you rely on your own intuition to really lead you through the building of this business?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (33:39.887)
So much, so much. You know, prior to flux, I feel like it's just such a normal thing to second guess yourself. And you feel it in your gut, like you know what you need to do, but you go with your, you know, your heart or your brain, or you just don't go there. And throughout my...
building a business, I'm starting to realize, you know, that's exactly what I need to be doing first and foremost, because it's always right. It's crazy how it's always right. And I've had these opportunities to be like, yes, I knew it. So I need to just keep leaning into that and trust myself. And so I do, really trust myself and the process and it doesn't always look clear in the moment.
Nicola Harris (34:09.457)
always.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (34:35.566)
but it's important, it's important, that intuition, it's real, it's there. And yeah, we might not always feel like we have the answers, but we'll find them. We'll find them. They're there, yeah.
Nicola Harris (34:43.504)
Mm-hmm. yeah, they're there. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Tell me about your most favorite part of building this business over the last couple of years.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (35:02.702)
my, that's so hard to answer. There's so many favorite parts. mean, from the group of people that walk in the door, like you always hear that it's just the community is so welcoming. Everybody's so wonderful. To the space is just so bright. And, you know, it's, I would have to say that watching
people get stronger, know, inside and outside of these rooms have more confident watching these bonds, you know, grow from a room that they met in or like watching the instructors find their confidence there. You can tell, you know, when a new instructor's found their instructor voice, it's just like, this is such a moment. And, you know, I feel like it's...
It's a lot of things that are my favorite part. I think that what's really cool is the surprises that come along the way because, you know, for me, I needed I needed a room that would fit bikes. And that's all I cared about. I needed a room to put some bodies on bikes and create that community feeling. And I figure it out from there. And
If it were up to me, Flux would have been in the back of a used car dealership and we would have been just fine. You know? And so the surprise behind that is that they, they said, no, we went to sign a lease and they said, no, right. We see what you are building here was his words, which just blows my mind. Cause at the time I'm like, no, I'm going to pay a lease. Like, what do you mean? But we see what you're building here and we don't think that we can house that for you.
And I felt like my world crumbled in that moment because I had a plan, but there was bigger things at work. And here we are witnessing the bigger things. it's those, it's, think, I think my, one of my favorite parts of it is just trusting the process and seeing what comes from that because it's not always cut and dry. And then witnessing the support that people.
Nicola Harris (37:05.544)
you
Nicola Harris (37:22.14)
Hmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (37:30.328)
give in those moments too and yeah, there's a lot of favorite parts. There's so many.
Nicola Harris (37:33.0)
And isn't that beautiful that you're like, my gosh, it's just full of favorite things. Like how incredible is that? So let's go back. Obviously I do a lot of nervous system work with people. So let's talk about just for a second, if there was any fear for you to have this big vision and to be executing it. Like was there because...
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (37:42.53)
Let's.
Nicola Harris (37:59.182)
You basically just said, here we go. I'm going to open up this location.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (38:10.456)
Somebody's here.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (38:17.87)
Bye there.
No.
Nicola Harris (38:24.934)
No, no, it's okay.
Yeah, mean, it already.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (38:28.782)
So sorry. Time stamp it so you know where to edit it.
Nicola Harris (38:31.752)
Okay. Yeah, I'm gonna ask you again. So let's switch gears for one second and talk a little bit about some of the fear that may have existed with you opening up this incredible studio. It was like, there's a lot, there's a lot of overhead, obviously, there's a lot of startup costs, there's a lot of things that go into that, that I think a lot of people who want to start businesses or expand,
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (38:36.846)
Can you ask me again?
Nicola Harris (39:00.156)
get really hung up on. So did any of that exist for you or were you just like, see the vision and I'm absolutely going for it?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (39:14.846)
my goodness, there's so much fear. was the scariest thing that I've ever, ever done. Just the thought of it scared me. I, I feel like when you're passionate about something and you truly believe that you can do something that driving force is huge. When you have that and you combine that with a partner that's telling you, you, you got this, like we're doing this together that
really just catapulted me. And that was my safety net. I had somebody else saying, you got this, I believe in you. And then when it all fell apart and we had the bikes, we had the equipment, but we didn't have the space, I said, I know what I need.
in this moment, I need to ride it out. I need to move my body. I need to clear my mind. I need to figure this out. And you always have to have that like, I'll figure this out mentality, whether you have the answers now or not, I can't tell you how many doors closed that I had to find a way to reopen or build my way around it. And it went from
my bike in the garage to, okay, well, we've got bikes. So, you know, let's ride with a couple friends and just keep moving our bodies and working through this. Something will happen. And that one bike went from one to five to 10 to 15 bikes in my garage and riding with my friends, my people, the people that, you know, wanted to move their bodies to, and that really was inspiring, but
they became my support system. They became the, well, if I can do this and they believe I can do this, then I can really do this. And so I was very fortunate in that I had a lot of support and people that believed in me.
Nicola Harris (41:20.156)
Hmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (41:27.99)
And I think just, and it's not that they even said anything. I think them just showing up was enough for me to say, you know, I got to keep pushing forward. I got to find a way to make this happen. But it was, it was the scariest thing I've ever done, but it was worth it.
Nicola Harris (41:40.052)
It's like once we get over the other side of it, all of a sudden you kind of look back and you go, it's not that scary. Right? And it's like, there's still scary moments. I mean, being an entrepreneur, I feel like being an entrepreneur, it's like you can be coasting and then all of a sudden out of nowhere, you're like hit a giant boulder and you're like, what? What happened? And it's like, you know, I've been an entrepreneur for 20 years and I still feel like that exists. It doesn't ever.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (41:52.238)
Mm-hmm.
Nicola Harris (42:08.932)
stop existing. But you start to develop so much self-trust, which is, you know, you've already said is there for you that that begins to cut the time down, right? Between where the fear is really showing up and where you get to go, well, actually, I got this. Like, I'm going to figure it out. Right? Yeah.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (42:32.37)
You also have to prove it to yourself too, right? Those initial scopes of look what I had to get through to get where I am. Whether that's, you know, the end goal is there or it's really far up ahead, you still got to where you are because of who you are and what your goals are, right? So I feel like that should be able to push people. Like I was capable there.
Nicola Harris (42:58.568)
room.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (43:00.074)
I could do something there. What can I do now? Where can I take this? How am I going to get around this barricade? What do I need to do next? It's just always that forward thinking and that belief in yourself. Believe in yourself and that's going to take you places.
Nicola Harris (43:11.656)
It's like one of the core things really. And it's hard to navigate business if you don't have that really. If you're second guessing all of your decisions, right? And I mean, it's incredible that you have such a solid support system.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (43:34.968)
that I didn't even know I had until they showed up, right? Like it was, yeah, it was very special the way that it all unfolded. And like I said, again, it wasn't words, it was just actions and actions always speak louder.
Nicola Harris (43:46.92)
Yeah, it's so incredible. So what is on the horizon for Flux as you continue to inspire our great community one bike ride at a time?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (44:07.014)
Well, Flux is really excited for summer. Last summer we did a summer series where we brought the bikes out of the studio and we went to amazing places around Chilliwack. We went to Cultist Lake, went to Soil Wellness up in Rider Lake, we went downtown 1881. So there's some fun surprises for this year's summer series. We're really excited about that.
and we, we really just want to get creative. Like we want to bring new experiences to our community. And when I say community, mean like Chilliwack to our home. And we want to bring more opportunity for movement, for more people, and share the magic and what that helps us.
Nicola Harris (44:45.296)
Mm-hmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (45:04.238)
get through, helps us celebrate, helps us do on the daily. How strong can we get? I'm really excited for that.
Nicola Harris (45:06.152)
Hmm.
I just love it, Kelly. Like, honestly, you really are creating such a huge ripple effect for so many people. And I hope every now and then you just allow yourself to sit in that to really understand what that means for each individual person that walks through the doors, but also for the people that they then go in and inspire and impact from there. So you're doing just incredibly beautiful work. So thank you. Thank you.
Where can we find out more about what it is that you do and perhaps someone wants to come in and experience it? Where's the best place for someone to connect with you?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (45:43.076)
Thank you. Thank you.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (45:55.053)
Yeah, we have our website. It shows our instructors. It gives you a bit of an idea of what their rooms are going to feel like. Their vibe is their favorite music, their favorite things to do either on the bike or in the strength room. So that's flexcyclehouse.ca. Our app has all of that information as well. And that's both in Google Play and Apple. And I mean, come visit us.
Nicola Harris (46:22.894)
Is it indeed that needs to go on my to-do list? I've been doing that for a while. I rode in the garage. I was the OG of the things, but I need to get into the studio to experience it fully. So yeah, it's on my to-do list for sure. Well, thank you so much again for sharing your energy, your wisdom, and really just all that you have brought to this community. Thank you so much. And everyone else, we'll see you again next week. Thank you for sharing this time with us.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (46:25.166)
Harvard place.
Yes!
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (46:43.608)
Perfect.
Nicola Harris (46:57.576)
So good. Absolutely.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (47:03.534)
Are you sure? Because I feel like I just bombed it.
Nicola Harris (47:03.642)
What are you talking about?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (47:11.362)
just, I don't know, yeah. Heads in the clouds this week, Nikki.
Nicola Harris (47:11.782)
No, it honestly, it was fine. feel like once we got rolling, I was like, yeah, I was like writing down all these times. I was like, I got to remember that time to clip that out. So no, don't you worry. Don't you worry. I feel like it was great for the fact that your head is in the clouds. It's like you're doing awesome. And are you speaking on Friday? I can't come, but you're speaking on the panel.
That's exciting.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (47:40.653)
Yeah, I'm speaking on the panel. Also very, yeah, it's very, very exciting. I'm super excited about that. Super. There's some really high highs happening right now. So like the clouds are really gorgeous as well. It's just, there's just such a whirlwind happening. I got asked to be a Lululemon ambassador the other day.
Nicola Harris (47:43.313)
Yeah.
Nicola Harris (47:57.582)
What?
Nicola Harris (48:02.978)
When is that gonna drop? my gosh, I missed it.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (48:04.754)
so big. So I'm just it's dropped like I've signed
They did it. like, they surprised me with a spin class. It's on, it's on my Instagram. Yeah. You got to see the class. was just such a beautiful moment. It was, it was, yeah, it was so beautiful.
Nicola Harris (48:14.76)
Okay, I gotta go. I gotta go look.
Nicola Harris (48:23.42)
you are so deserving of that, friend. Really, that's like the perfect, the perfect thing. Yeah.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (48:32.686)
I'm
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (48:36.782)
It's a dream. it was like always. I've always wanted to be. I've never, I could be wrong, but like I've never come across a spin instructor for train ambassadors. So they've, they've added indoor cycling to the train portion. And so, I mean, I'm also a strength and conditioning coach too, but I mean, let's be real. Yeah. Yeah. It's only going to, but yeah. So that's.
Nicola Harris (48:42.961)
No!
Nicola Harris (48:51.208)
Mmm.
Nicola Harris (48:56.456)
But still, yeah, yeah.
Nicola Harris (49:04.808)
breaking out.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (49:06.646)
It's crazy cool. It's crazy cool. it's, mean, it's been my favorite brand my whole life of knowing them, right? So I, and like to sit down with them and they're very much like, these are our values. Let's make sure that they align. This is what's important to us. And it's like, check, check, check. Like flux and them are just like perfect partnership. It's so cool to, yeah.
Nicola Harris (49:09.479)
Right?
Nicola Harris (49:19.08)
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Nicola Harris (49:28.656)
my gosh, I love this. I love, love, love, love, love. Like that, it's so perfect. And like what fun are you gonna have? So.
Nicola Harris (49:45.5)
Yeah. my God, girl! Why didn't we mention that?
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (49:45.838)
so much fun. want to be part of this.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (49:54.254)
Okay.
I don't know, don't want, I have this like, I have a really hard time about like, I don't ever want to come across like I'm gloating or you know, like.
Nicola Harris (50:00.492)
Oh, I know. I understand. The struggle is real in that. get it. But still, I would have gloated on your behalf. I would have been like, my girl is the new Lululemon ambassador. Excusez-moi. Seriously, that's a big fucking deal. Maybe I'll redo my introduction and be like, and also, hello. That's amazing. Oh my God.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (50:09.176)
Yeah.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (50:18.04)
Well, hook it up. You record.
Yeah.
Nicola Harris (50:30.618)
Okay, I just love that for you. And that's amazing. like, yeah, stuff like that. I just feel like it instantaneously, not that you needed it, but elevates your authority in a totally like in a way different way, right? That, yeah, that's very fucking cool.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (50:32.738)
legit. So yeah, you can definitely add it in if you want.
Nicola Harris (50:50.129)
I love that.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (50:54.73)
is so cool. I know the best way that I can describe how it makes me feel is like, I don't know, everybody's relationship with their mom was so different. But my mom's support always made me feel invincible, right? Like it always made me feel like, kind of like how Jamie makes me feel when I look back at being able to do flux, like it was like, okay, I've got my I've got my support system in place. My mom passed away six years ago, and
Nicola Harris (51:10.962)
Thank you.
Nicola Harris (51:17.681)
Hmm.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (51:23.624)
felt a little lost without that kind of support. And so when Lulu came in and told me all the things they want to support with, I was just like, felt like that, a big sister that motherly support where it just like pumps you up and makes you feel like, I can do these things. Or yeah, like we can reach further because I've got got you by my side kind of thing. Right?
Nicola Harris (51:33.509)
you
Nicola Harris (51:44.292)
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely. And them amplifying that, like that's huge. It's huge.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (51:56.047)
It's huge. See, so I haven't really processed it because, you know, I've got Women's Day coming up and then I got broken into and so I'm just like, I'm here, I'm there. I'm just, I'm sorry. If you want to read you guys, listen back to it and you're like, no, this doesn't make sense or whatever.
Nicola Harris (51:57.255)
Yeah!
Nicola Harris (52:02.396)
Yeah. Yeah.
my gosh, well, celebrating you.
Nicola Harris (52:13.948)
Right? Okay. I will. I'll look at it. If it's like, whatever that then we'll just take that as a sign is like, we need to re-record and hang out again. That's fine. I will let you know. But honestly, from what I was picking up, I like made lots of notes here. So it's not, it's not like I was like, my God, what? Never.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (52:26.925)
love that.
Nicola Harris (52:37.8)
No problem. No problem. I love interviewing people. It's like my I could do this all day long. I just love learning about people's stories and like how they came to be. It's so fun.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (52:38.382)
Your questions were so like, thank you. So good. So good.
Nicola Harris (52:52.155)
All right, maybe.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (52:55.476)
It is so fun. I also feel like it's just not, not just mine, you know, like this story belongs to so many. So.
Nicola Harris (52:59.464)
Well, yes, but also you are their leader. You're their leader. You got to take credit for that girlfriend because it's not happening. It doesn't happen without someone really doing that work.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (53:07.81)
I'm learning.
Nicola Harris (53:16.262)
Yeah. Put your crown on.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (53:19.404)
Yeah, yeah, you're right. You are right. gosh, give her a moment.
Nicola Harris (53:25.97)
Honestly. Yeah, good. It's just I feel like I am in the land of 8,000 details, you know, of like, I got to get this done and this has got to get like, it's it's just that right now. But it's wild. I think it's very wild stepping into this part of my identity. Like I.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (53:30.987)
How's the book and everything going?
Nicola Harris (53:51.538)
had a bit of a meltdown on Monday, I'm not gonna lie. was like, fuck, this is wild. Like it's, am I ready for this? Like, you know, just all the same shit. It's like, who do you think you are? And like, I'm like, are we not past that yet? Like I literally come up against you all the time. And I was just laughing because I was like, well, I know that this is part of it. But then on Tuesday morning I woke up and I was like, I feel fucking fabulous. So I guess that was just my comfort zone, having a little temper tantrum. And then,
fine, right? But it's, again, bigger than I'll ever let myself sit in probably, right? It's like I tell people to do this all the live long day and then I'm like, I it's so uncomfortable to sit in the magnitude of it sometimes, right? And you're like, shit. All right, we doing it. And it's it's coming. Today, I was like, my gosh. It's like, it's March. Spring break is a write off.
And then it's April, and you know what I mean? And then I'm like, my gosh, I got to get some stuff wrapped up. it's great, but I'm so excited for it to be out in the world because...
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (55:02.261)
you'll do it.
Nicola Harris (55:06.458)
You know, who knows what's going to happen? That's the thing. I don't know. I can't project what's going to happen next. And I love that. I love that. I can't wait to go to Europe for two weeks. That's amazing. I can't wait for all these conversations that the book tour is going to bring. Like, I am so excited for that piece of it. I just can't wait.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (55:13.624)
Totally.
Nicola Harris (55:36.41)
I can't wait.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (55:41.486)
It's so incredible. Okay, South of France? How does this happen?
Nicola Harris (55:44.104)
I mean, I don't even know. was like, one of my past mentors, she's Canadian. She lives in the south of France now with her family. And we are good friends. We're great friends now. And I had this thought one day. I was like, what if I am audacious enough to decide that I'm going to do an international book tour with my self-published first book and a following at the time of like 600 people?
I was like, who does that? But then I said it to Suzanne. I was like, as soon as you say something out loud, I feel like the universe just rearranges to meet you there. And it's hard to say it out loud because I was like, who the fuck do I think I am? But I said it to her and she's like, let's do a retreat. And I was like, are you freaking kidding me? I am 1,000 % a yes because doing retreats has been
part of what I wanted to do really since I left Culture Co. and started doing this work on my own. And then it just went from there. Then it was just like, how big can I really make this? How wild can I? And it's funny because as soon as you give yourself permission,
to take ownership of something, it's incredible what happens. I'm like, now my whole identity is going to Europe for two weeks and hosting a retreat there and then doing book stuff. And I will do a retreat every single year. Who knows where's that? And it's just like, I am this person.
And it's like, why did I ever think that I couldn't be, that I wasn't capable or wasn't, that that wasn't a possibility for me, right?
Nicola Harris (57:46.62)
Yeah!
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (57:48.035)
Right? It's so easy to hold ourselves back because it's scary or it's hard or you don't see the end goal being attainable. But what if you just keep moving? What about the action?
Nicola Harris (57:53.064)
Great.
What about the action? And then it's like, it's amazing who shows up. Right? And you're like, my God, I like was making this a big deal and it's not even a big deal at all.
Nicola Harris (58:09.66)
So doable. Yeah, it's wild. it's this spring is going to be I don't even think I know yet. And that's that's the fun part. You know, is that. Yeah.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (58:12.494)
It's so doable. It's so, that's so cool.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (58:26.328)
Yeah, it's an element of surprise. It's all because of you. Yeah, it's really cool to watch, like really cool. Yeah.
Nicola Harris (58:27.772)
Right? It's wild.
Oh, thank you. Thank you. Well, I definitely need to get my ass moving. I mean, I go to the gym most days, but I have been really not on it. And that I hate it because I need to move my body in order for me to not get wrapped in my head all the time. So I need to find a way to. Yeah, definitely coming Tuesdays. I was like me and Lindsay. I'm like, we got to go.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (58:55.404)
Me too.
Nicola Harris (58:58.752)
someone needs to come with me. But I also need to, I mean, that's not a ride. So I do miss it. I remember leaving the garage before and just being like, I need this in my life every friggin' day.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (59:11.182)
I need.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (59:16.718)
Yeah, there's something to be said. But group fitness is also like that. It's not necessarily just the ride room that has that effect on people, right? And I don't know, Michelle is, she's something special, man. She's incredible. So you'll get those feelings in there, in her area. You will.
Nicola Harris (59:29.672)
Yeah, cool. Well, I'm going to start there, and then I'm sure it's a slippery slope. Dani's in the house of more, and she's always like, I love Flux. I'm like, I know. I know. It's amazing.
So good.
Benedictine, right? But like in the best frickin way.
Kelly T- Fluxx CycleHouse (59:49.386)
It is a bit addicting. It is a bit addicting. But in the best way. Yeah, it's special. I'm excited to see you. I teach two nights after Michelle, so we'll cross paths. Yeah.
Nicola Harris (59:56.21)
Yeah, I'm excited to see it too.
That's amazing. Okay. Well, I hope to see you more than that. But anyways, I also know that we're all fucking busy and you know, parenting and doing all the things over here, but that's just life. But thank you for spending this time with me. I appreciate you. Yeah.

Thank you. Thank you for believing that I could do it in a week where I feel like I can't do much.
Nicola Harris (01:00:19.496)
Yeah, no, you did it, girlfriend. I will listen to the whole thing because I won't set you up for failure. I won't put you out there like that. If I think it, but from what I was listening to, I was like, no, this is great. I'll edit out the pieces that I need to and away we'll go. Yeah. Okay, lady, we'll talk to you soon. Bye. Good to see you too. Bye.

needed some love. We were pregnant with our first baby boy and a week after we moved in.
became my place of healing. Then came the roof leaks, mysterious $2,000 water bills, termites, and infestations. Everyone said we should move. We considered it, but this was home. Then we had a miracle and welcomed our baby girl home. And last year when I found out I was pregnant again, we decided to renovate for our growing family. But just as we started the process, we lost our second baby boy unexpectedly. When we moved out for the renovation, it felt like our world was torn down. But in the midst of it, I held onto the hope that this house, our home, was ready for a new chapter.
We're moving back in and about to see it for the first time. Our story isn't over yet. I can't wait to share the next steps in making our house a home. Everyone told us to sell our.
